Most of what Carpetstory weaves is made to order. A custom rug starts with a room, a drawing or a colour reference, and becomes a technical sheet you approve before the loom is warped. This page sets out how that works, in the order it happens.
Custom size rugs, to the centimetre
A custom rug can be any size or shape: a narrow runner for a corridor, a round rug under a dining table, or a piece that fills a whole room. We weave to the dimensions of your floor rather than a catalogue grid, and we state the tolerances before we begin.
The sizes most rooms call for, 8 by 10, 9 by 12 and 10 by 14 feet, are woven to order on the same looms as the bespoke pieces. A standard size gets the same hands and the same time as a one-off.
Custom colour: RAL and Pantone matching on hand-dyed wool
Send a RAL or Pantone reference and we match it on hand-dyed wool. The colours come from madder, indigo and walnut in the atelier's own vats, so each match is dyed for your rug rather than picked from a stock shade card. No two natural dye lots are identical, which is why the tolerance is agreed first and a physical sample comes to you for approval.
Your design, or one of ours in your size
Designers send their own artwork, and we return it as a technical sheet ready for the loom, with size, construction, material and palette set out. Or choose a piece from the collections and have it woven in the dimensions of your room. Every Carpetstory rug is woven to order, so the exact size of your floor is the only size that matters.

Custom rugs for interior designers and hotel projects
The trade desk handles specification for interior designers, architects, importers and hotel projects: trade pricing, project samples and one point of contact from brief to delivery. Programme orders start at five pieces per design, and for designers we also weave single bespoke pieces. Hand-knotted, hand-tufted and machine-made constructions are all available for contract work.
Most projects begin with the sample kit: four samples, each twelve inches square, woven to your specification. Two are hand-knotted and two tufted, and the first four are on us.
Lead times and delivery
A hand-knotted custom rug spends six to ten months on the loom, depending on size and knot density. Tufted and machine-made programmes move considerably faster, and exact lead times come with your quotation. We ship worldwide by sea or air from Delhi, door to door to Germany and the EU, the Gulf, North America and beyond.

Can I order a rug in any size?
Yes. Any size or shape to the centimetre, from runners to room-filling pieces. Tolerances are stated before we begin.
Can you match a Pantone or RAL colour?
Yes, on hand-dyed wool. You approve a physical sample of the match before weaving starts. Natural dye lots are never identical, so the tolerance is agreed up front.
How long does a custom rug take?
Six to ten months on the loom for a hand-knotted piece. Tufted and machine-made programmes are faster. Exact lead times come with your quotation, within one business day of your brief.
What size rug do I need for a living room or bedroom?
For a living room, a rug that sits under the front legs of every seat: 8 by 10 or 9 by 12 feet in most rooms. For a bedroom, a rug that extends at least two feet beyond the sides and foot of the bed: 8 by 10 for a queen, 9 by 12 for a king.
Can I use my own design?
Yes. Size, construction, material and palette are made to your specification, and you approve CAD-ready technical sheets and a physical sample before production.
Is there a minimum order?
Programme and wholesale orders start at five pieces per design. For interior designers and architects we also weave single bespoke pieces to project specification.
Do you ship custom rugs outside India?
Worldwide, by sea or air from Delhi, with full export documentation and door-to-door delivery. Import duty and VAT depend on your country and the Incoterm on your quotation.
